Black Magic- Another film by ZG Films



ZG Films and Media House – a quality Zanzibar based production house led by well-known photographer and filmmaker, Javed Jafferji – has already produced several high-quality documentaries and Swahili Films dealing with important issues and events on the islands of Zanzibar and in Tanzania.

 ZG Films and Media House aims to extend the impact and reach of the Tanzanian film industry, exposing it to international acclaim by setting a new, world-class standard in the industry. 
We proudly present our next Swahili Feature Film “Black Magic”.

Black Magic is a story about a researcher from Europe doing her research in Zanzibar on the subject of Black Magic and the healing methods related to black magic rituals. The film is about Angela’s journey on many levels. Angela is the protagonist of the film which is played by Lisa Jensen.

Black Magic has an interesting cast and storyline. Its basic plot is inspired by a true historical story from Zanzibar. It has excellent story narrative, good performances, great locations and high quality special effects. 

It is a historical story which has a horror element to it. It is a Swahili Feature Film which will match international standards and will not only appeal to the Swahili speaking audience but also to people all across the world.

Produced by Javed Jafferji who is one of the most renowned names of Zanzibar and who has produced many documentaries and films in the past. Black Magic is  a presentation by the same Director and Producer team of Javed Jafferji and Amitabh Aurora who first made Glamour -The reality behind dreams . Glamour was shortlisted in many film festivals like Zanzibar International Film Festival, Montreal Black Film festival, Seattle Film Festival and GFI.

Black Magic is Written and Directed by Amitabh Aurora who is a filmmaker from Mumbai, India. It’s his third Swahili feature film the first two being Usaliti and Glamour. According to the director this is his best work so far and he also expects this film to be a benchmark in terms of storytelling, direction and technique for all future Swahili feature films. The director is confident that this film will appeal to worldwide audience as it has all the ingredients of a good feature film.

Story Synopsis
Angela comes to the island of Zanzibar from Europe for her research on the subject of Black Magic. She has always been intrigued by the place Zanzibar; she decides to make Zanzibar as the place for her research because of her personal interest in knowing the culture and history of Zanzibar and also because of the strong influence of black magic rituals to cure people with mental ailments and psychological disorders.

In Zanzibar she meets a guy named Said who runs a local tour company; they get close to each other and develop feelings for each other. During her research she meets a very famous witch doctor from Zanzibar and post her meeting with him scary incidents start happening in her life.  Things get complicated for her, she starts getting nightmares and realises that she is part of an unsolved mystery from the past, things become very difficult for her she gets haunted in her dreams and gets to know that there is a historical connection she has with this place and a very strong reason why life has got her to Zanzibar. Angela is even scared of sleeping now; her life gets into a real mess and becomes hell for her.
Inspired by true events located within the historical context of Omani Era and the culture of Black Magic healing in Zanzibar.

Glamour: The Reality Behind Dreams



After doing its rounds in many Film Festivals across the world Glamour – the reality behind dreams Z G Films debut Swahili feature film made in the year 2011 is finally being released on DVD’s, VCD’s and also VHS all over East Africa. The movie will be out on DVD’s, VCD’s and VHS from January 2012 in all the major DVD, VCD sales and rental stores. All the DVD’s and VCD’s will have subtitles in English Language. The running time of the film is 124 minutes and is available in two parts. The film will be distributed all over East Africa by STEPS ENTERTAINMENT LTD. Glamour was shortlisted and featured in many film festivals and cultural centre’s this year like ZIFF,GFI America, Montreal Black Films Festival  the film was also screened at Goethe institute and cultural centre and was well received by audience everywhere.

 Glamour: The Reality Behind Dreams is ZG Films and Media House’s first feature film. It is a new-era Bongo Movie inspired by Swahili Fashion Week – Tanzania’s premier fashion event – and confronts the dirty truth behind the modelling industry. The main protaganist is played by none other than top model, Eva Issac (aka ‘Eva the Diva’). In Glamour: The Reality Behind Dreams, Eva plays ‘Sophia’, a Muslim Zanzibari girl who from childhood dreams of becoming a model. Sophia moves to the big city, Dar es Salaam with the help of her boyfriend and against her conservative mother’s wishes. Anxious to get to the top, Sophia is lucky enough to find opportunities with celebrated Tanzanian fashion designer, Mustafa Hassanali and famous Zanzibari photographer, Javed Jafferji. Once successful, Sophia’s ego drives her to neglect and mistreat those who brought her to success, and soon she is forced to desperate levels to stay on top.

Eva Issac has worked regularly for fashion designer and socialite, Mustafa Hassanali, modelling his couture designs, and it is in Glamour: The Reality Behind Dreams where he makes his acting debut. Experienced actress, Mama Mjata also features in the film, and says that shooting Glamour was the “very best experience” of her acting career. Glamour also features such names as Bond Bin Sulieman, James Alistair, Full Tank, and Javed Jafferji, amongst others.

James Alistair, previously unknown in the Bongo Movie industry, has starred in various Hollywood films, showing just how this new era of Bongo Movies is now attracting filmmakers and actors from around the world. Another such person is Amitabh Aurora, Director of Glamour, an actor and filmmaker from Mumbai, India, who has come to Tanzania passionate about improving the quality of filmmaking here and training Tanzanian filmmakers and actors to improve their films so as to meet the demands of the Tanzanian and international markets. Amongst Amitabh’s past work one can find such films as the thriller Usaliti (‘Betrayal’).
